We left a rain soaked Townsville around 8:45am with Cairns as a sort of destination. We drove through Cairns around 1:30pm and thought we'd check out the beaches north of Cairns for a possible camp site but they were either taken up with resorts and caravan parks or were too close to the road with no camping signs everywhere. So we kept going and ended up inland at the beginning of the peninsula development road.
The Mt Molloy rest area. It's actually in the camps 6 book and I think a lot of people must have that book as the rest area was packed. It was difficult to find a spot that wasn't boggy from the rain but we found a spot and got all set up we had a bit of water to mop up inside as we had packed up wet and the canvas had not quite weathered. Actually I think we haven't really had much of a wet camp before.
We camped next to a houso bunch. They were amusing but annoying at the same time. One lot had 3 hunting dogs and a 2 month old baby boy. They told us they had been in the road for about five years. They were travelling in a falcon sedan and camping in a tent. The young girl told us how her son was delivered three weeks early in a creek bed. The ambulance came about 15 mins after he was born.
The other couple had been at the campsite for about a week and were waiting for like minded people to travel with. The bloke had left the plug out of his eski and water had leaked drowning the mattress. They ended up chucking the mattress under the bonnet and started the motor up to try to dry it out. These two groups ended up camping next to each other and spent most of the night around a camp fire swearing and carrying on. Quite rude really. But much quieter and actually pleasant to talk to the next day.
Glad to hear that the car is ok.
